We live in an age of increasing intolerance of all kinds. One of the
forms of intolerance you will find hardest to deal with flourishes at some
universities. It is called “political correctness’ and it is designed to in-
timidate people and to censor their speech and behaviour and to con-
trol what they are allowed to think.
Now, nobody should be rude, insensitive or offensive, that is plain
bad manners. Having lived and worked in a culturally diverse envi-
ronment, I hope you have learned this. After all, being civil is what
civilization is about. The new intolerance, however, is not about civ-
ility, it is about censorship and control. The new standards of correct-
ness do not help you to deal with disagreements, competition and conflict
in a civilized way. These new standards are in many respects similar
to old forms of intolerance which forbid you to do, think or say certain
things because somebody disagrees. It does not matter how noble the
motives may be, the result is the same: intolerance rules.
Fortunately, you have been at a politically incorrect school. We not
only permit competition, we encourage it and expect everybody to do
his or her best. We do not limit or withdraw some sports or courses
because everybody cannot do them well. We recognize excellence and
reward it without thinking in terms of winners and losers. There are
no penalties for not being excellent, only penalties for not trying. In
contrast, much of the new wave of political correctness is designed to
keep you from trying because you are the wrong sex, the wrong colour
or the wrong age.
At university you may face pressure not to participate in some things,
not to try others; you may be asked to protest the unfairness of com-
petitive sports, demanding course and elite standards. You will find
that this pressure is not caused by the fact that these things are wrong
or illegal, but that they are simply unpopular with some loud self-
interest group. Resist them. Do not let them limit your lives and nar-
row your opportunities.
Keep in mind that those pushing for new standard of correctness us-
ually want to impose standards that will favour them. Too often, their
call to be correct is not designed to make people try harder or to reform
an unfair system, but to impose a new system which is both unrealistic
and potentially destructive of the freedoms we enjoy. If something of-
fends somebody, it should not be said, done or even thought. If all can-
not compete or participate, nobody should play. If all cannot be excellent,
there should be no awards for achievement. This is a prescription for
mediocrity to prevail; for “niceness” to be the only social norm. This
is not for your.
Remember, no matter how far standards are lowered, by a simple rule
of mathematics, half of us must be under the correct average. Better
to be under average in a class of Einsteins or on a team of Gretzkys
than to never have had the chance to find out how good you really are
because somebody wants to keep you from trying.

Mr. Peter Ashworth
Once again the Spectrum staff located in “that
room” behind the Tuck Shop has created yet an-
other great yearbook. From September until after
the closing days of school, the age old tradition of
the school yearbook is produced.
This year with the addition of a Spectrum com-
puterization program a few things changed and
will continue to evolve as these computers become
more and more a part of the overall production of
the yearbook.
Thank you to everyone that was a part of the
Spectrum staff and to Mr. Ashworth who was a
tremendous help.
I hope that you enjoy this year’s Spectrum, that
is filled with great moments and memories of an
unforgettable school year!

Stanstead College is a small community that brings individuals, from a vast international background
together to strive both academically and athletically and to persue the development of hobbies and talents.
As Head Prefect along with my fellow prefects, I’ve tried to incite enthusiasm amongst peers to appreciate
each other and participate in an exemplary manner. I’ve encouraged students to greet the challenges and
the demands they encounter in Stanstead’ s environment, as they will learn much from great expectations
and difficult times.
While carrying out the responsibilities of Head Prefect to the best of my abilities, I’ve managed to devote
time to the friendships I’ve acquired here and the activities and personal hobbies, like theatre arts, music
and various team sports that I’ve been able to develop. I’ve also continued to put much effort into my studies
to maintain the level of achievement Stanstead has taught me to expect from myself. I’ve used my six years
in Stanstead as an opportunity to greatly achieve and develop friendships I hope will last forever. I hope
other students will benefit from their experience at Stanstead in the same way I have.

I was appointed the new House Director this year and tried to offer new
ideas and a different approach for residence life. The year was a challenge
considering that there was not one spare bed and that we also had the senior
male day students residing in the basement. Living together is one of the
biggest challenges you can have and you have to work very hard as a group
to have a good environment for everyone.
The year started very well with initiation which ended with dodgeball fol-
lowed by a BBQ. The house committee raised money all year which helped
with house entertainment during the year and ended the year with the best
house party ever. On behalf of the Davis students I would like to thank the
committee for all their hard work.
A new Assistant House Director came to us this year in the person of Mr.
Christian Williams, the new art teacher. This was his first year at a board-
ing school. He worked very hard to adapt to this new way of life and I thank
him for all his help. Finally I would like to thank Alvaro, Fred, Tony, Gil-
more, Ryan, Eric and Mike for a great job this year. The most difficult job
in a school is to gain the respect of your peers, especially your friends. I am
very proud to have had such a great group of prefects and I thank them for
their consistent hard work throughout the year. I would also like to thank
the TODs who make our job easier and the cleaning and maintenance staff
who help us keep the house in good shape. A special thanks to all the Davis
residents for making my first year as House Director a great one.

Recipe for a senior girls dorm a la
Webster
MIX: 48 distinct personalities be-
tween 14 and 18 years of age. Be
careful that you don’t mix too well
or you might lose the distinct flavor.
ADD: Two house directors, four
T.O.D.’s, and a couple of dogs to do
the supervising.
Stir in: A lot of love, time and pa-
tience with a firm hand.
Blend until relatively smooth and
serve into a dorm that is gorgeous
to look at and voila!
This year has been another one of
growth for all of us in Webster. We’d
like to thank the prefects for their
hardwork and to wish good fortune
to those heading out into the wider
world.

It was a great pleasure to work with Mr. Norman Southward once again in Bugbee
House this year. I am, however, sorry to say that this is the last year that we will be
together as the duo in charge of Bugbee. Mr. Southward is remaining at the school,
but leaving the job of Assistant House Director. The ongoing presence of the South-
wards (Mr., Mrs., Kodi) in the house will be missed in the coming years, although Mr.
Southward will remain attached to the house as a T.O.D.
The House Committee was very much involved and enthusiastic about the food sales.
Sometimes we only managed to break even, or pay for the House Committee snack,
but it was still, I believe, an enjoyable and learning experience for those involved.
Day students returned to Bugbee this year, to positive and negative ends. Some of
them were a pleasure to have in the house. For others, however, it was nice to see them
leave at the end of the day, as they treated Bugbee more like a recreation center than
residence. The boarders, at least, had a little more room to spread out this year.
The prefects were solid in their role in the house. They could always be counted on
to do a good duty. The overflow of senior boys in the school meant that we also had
a handful of seniors living in Bugbee once again this year.
Good luck to the 9’s and seniors moving on to Davis or to CEGEP/University, and
thanks to all for a good year.
Mr. Andre Simard

Last September, Colby House became a Junior Girls’ Residence.
The cheery yellow halls and comfortably refurbished lounge pro-
vide a home-like atmosphere for our girls during their leisure time.
Interestingly enough, hardly any room changes were requested
throughout the entire year. The girls, on the whole, got along well
together, right from the very start. The Head of House, Prefect
M’Thsa Ector and Prefects Akiko Fujimoto, Julia Lee, Kristina
Porter and Gillian Skelton are to be commended for their kind
support and warm commitment toward the junior girls.
Among the House’s most enjoyable times this year were the X-
mas party and the many fun-filled food sales. The success of these
events was due largely to the initiation of the House Director, Miss
Julie Senior and to the T.O.D.’s, Mrs. Geneve Channell, Miss Ra-
chel Gallant and Mrs. Isabel Marcotte. Thank you all for a great
year in Colby House.

EUROPEAN TOUR
62
Thanks to the support of Exotic Tours in Montreal and a lot of work by Mr. Andre Simard, the school was once again
able to offer a trip over the March Break. And a great trip it was! The main itinerary took us to Amsterdam, Paris
and Brussels but we also visited Rotterdam, Den Haag, Maastricht, Utrecht, Versailles, Caen, Rouen, Amiens and Brugges.
A very interesting part of the journey took us to the Normandy beaches, the D-Day Museum at Arromanches, the Ca-
nadian War Cemetery at St. Beny-sur-Mer and to Vimy Ridge and the impressive Canadian War Memorial which dom-
inates the skyline above the plains of Flanders.
We were initially apprehensive about flying Nationair with all their contractual problems but our flight to Brussels
on March 21 was both on time and uneventful. Getting back to Montreal would be another story.
We left immediately from Brussels and spent much of the first day on the road to Amsterdam, the Venice of the North.
Highlights of our 3 day stay in Amsterdam and Holland included seeing or visiting amongst many things the famous
windmills and the system of canals and dykes, a diamond cutting factory, Anne Frank Haus and the Heineken Brewery.
Paris was highlighted by touring her most famous sights both during the day and night in the City of Light, shopping
and dining on the Champs Elysees and a visit to the magnificent palace at Versailles. We went from Paris to the me-
dieval town of Brugges following a two day swing through northern France where we visited a castle believed to belong
to William the Conqueror and saw many famous battle sites from both world wars. Our trip ended on March 31st fol-
lowing a 2 day visit to Brussels. Or so we thought.
We arrived at the airport (April Fool’s Day) and were told our flight was delayed until Friday and we would spend
another day in Brussels. However, after contacting Canada we found that we would not be going home on Friday either.
Or maybe ever . . . because Nationair had been grounded indefinitely. Alternate plans were arranged through British
Airways. We flew Brussels-London (Gatwick), took a shuttle to Heathrow and a connecting flight to Mirabel. We ended
up spending 2 extra days (and seeing an extra country) while abroad.
Some memories from the trip include Sakiko learning about frogs in Plumbing 101, the slogan for the trip became
“Don’t drink the water”, we all learned the benefits of being timely vegetarians and Hammer turning his trip into
a tour of the great culinary centres of Europe (Golden Arches).

This year’s senior boys soccer team came very close to win-
ning the play-off championship. It came down to a last min-
ute penalty shot goal by B.C.S.! What a heart breaker!
It is easy to use cliches and superlatives when talking about
a good team but that type of rhetoric often rings hollow. To
put it simply: This year’s team was a good group of guys who
could have played better on some days and worse on others.
Everyone had fun and in general everyone worked hard for
each other.
It would be unfair for me not to mention the contribution
of Alvaro Porres, our all-star forward. Alvaro is a skillful
and gifted soccer player. Other veterans, including Fred Scal-
abrini, Francois Lauziere, and Martin Lafleur added stabil-
ity to an otherwise youthful team.
In the end the character shown by this team in that tough
final loss made me a very proud coach. Thanks.

This was my first year coaching the Senior
Girls’ Soccer team and it turned out to be both
a fun and a frustrating season. We had a well
balanced team with lots of enthusiasm.
Our main difficulty this year was our lack of
scoring goals. We had many opportunities to put
the ball in the net but it seemed that the foot
went crooked when ever it was time to score.
We were very unlucky all year and never
seemed to get the breaks.
We did make it to the playoffs and if we could
have had one break during our game against
Galt we probably would have upset them.
I would like to thank everyone for making this
year so enjoyable. I would like to congratulate
Kristen, Akiko and Gillian for receiving their
Major ‘S’ and Simone, M’Tasa, Clare and Ann-
Marie for receiving their Senior ‘S’. To the play-
ers that are leaving thank you for representing
the school so well and be sure to come back to
visit. To the students coming back - see you next
year.

As has been the case most often in recent years, the 1992 foot-
ball Spartans opened pre-season training low on experience (with
11 out of our 24 players having never before played organized
football) and high on enthusiasm.
In spite of all the hard work and perseverance, by season’s
end some seven weeks later our record stood at 1 win and 6
defeats. The team’s lack of depth (10 players were required to
play two ways) and experience, coupled with two very worthy
league opponents in Alexander Galt and Bishop’s College School,
proved to be our undoing.
Season highlites included our three game series with B.C.S.
Although we did not manage to win, the team clearly played
its best football against Bishop’s, with the ultimate outcome
in each of the three games undecided until the final whistle.
The team was extremely fortunate to have a role model to
look up to in the person of our team captain, Jaime Stenger.
Jaime’s composure, leadership and skill level, both in offense
at quarterback as well as in the defensive secondary, were qual-
ities which the team greatly benefited from.
The 1992 Spartans was comprised of 24 young men who
worked hard learned some football and had fun doing it.

This year our team was very small but was
blessed with extra determination and some good
talent as well. The runners began the year in quite
a lot of pain, but lo and behold they got into shape
and could run 4 to 6 Km without wincing.
That was when running became more fun and
we went for long tours through the woods and even
a 20Km bike ride when there were too many in-
juries one week (too bad it snowed!!). In the meets
at BCS and Galt we got near the top, but the ‘piece
de resistance’ was the ETIAC meet held here at
Stanstead.
We were psyched. At the start our Bantam speed-
ster Rosalind Telling just loped away at her nor-
mal and dependable rate; but to our joy and
amazement arrived well ahead of the rest! Our first
gold! At the end of the day the senior boys’ race
was a grueling 6 Km run and what did I see? Yes
- Victor Kasowski leading by a few precious se-
conds! We were all delighted.
So, although GALT won all the team awards we
all felt that we had improved dramatically and that
if we could only get a few more runners out next
year we stand a good chance at not only individ-
ual firsts but team gold as well.

Over the past years, the Soccer Program at Stanstead College has
gone from strength to strength and the Junior Boys’ Team was no ex-
ception to this trend. The 1992 season saw the largest turnout at this
level for a decade and so many individuals displayed skill and enthu-
siasm that it was decided to keep the unprecedented number of twenty-
three in the ‘squad’. This had one great advantage in permitting full
scrimmages during any practice session but was only feasible as long
as many boys accepted that they would not always be starting players
in league games. Through the maturity and patience of many team mem-
bers, it was possible to retain all twenty-three, throughout the season
and everyone played competetively at one time or another, especially
in tournaments and exhibition games.
With this depth of skill, enthusiasm and maturity, the team was highly
competetive. The final results for League play were - four wins, three
losses and one draw. Even in defeat, goal margins were very tight and
the team finished in second place in the E.T.I.A.C. Hopes for the play-
offs were, once again, very high but these were dashed in the first round
after a closely-fought match against Massey -Vanier.
The entire team was a great pleasure to coach and the Junior Boys
have continued to make a significant contribution to the entire Soccer
Program. Well done!

Miss Senior and I were very encouraged by the ta-
lent we observed at the beginning of the season. Each
player had their own individual talents. The new girls
all had some soccer background which complemented
the experience gained by the team veterans.
The difficult part of the season was to successfully
coordinate their individual talents. The beginning
of the season was rough for the girls since they had
not yet learned to play as a group.
As the season progressed the girls put in a tremen-
dous effort and banded together as a team. This was
evident during their last four games. The tables were
turned and the girls dominated the games. Their op-
ponents were more than a little surprised.
The girls together improved tremendously as a
team. A few line changes also helped the team’s later
success. Velika Parent performed well as a forward
and Sarah Channell proved herself as a promising
half-back and a great captain. Suzie McDonald and
Melanie Aubut will be great additions to the Senior
Girls soccer team. Ruth Darling and Helen Li were
the team’s key defensive players. Our goalie Josee
Larocque also showed a great deal of improvement
in the later part of the season.
This year was a year of learning for the junior girls.
They did a great job and we are very proud of the
Junior Girls Soccer Team.

A young and inexperienced yet keen group of players formed
this year’s Bantam Soccer team. The team had difficulty com-
ing up on the win side in league play, however showed deter-
mination and heart despite the losses. All players showed good
improvements in skill and fitness throughout the season, and
the numerous returning players make next year look promis-
ing. Bantam “S” winners included captain Vito Pagnelli, Mat-
thew Stevenson and Marvin Filteau. The nets were minded by
Thomas Phaneuf and Peter Atkin, both performing well under
the tough conditions. Thanks to all players and player-manager
Noah Vachon for their participation. I look forward to an im-
proved record next season!

This year’s Senior Boys team may not have been as good on paper as some previous teams, but it managed
some impressive achievements nonetheless.
We once again set two goals for the season, this time to qualify for the Anderson-Bailly Tournament,
and to make the ETIAC playoffs. We didn’t qualify for the A-B, but were invited as a replacement team.
We did, however, manage to reach the Championship final of the A-B, losing to a strong Selwyn House
team. By doing this, we also qualified for the Visser Tournament, the QASA Championships. At the Visser,
we made it to the Consolation Final and lost to Centennial Regional.
Over the course of the season, we also won our own SC Invitational Tournament for the first time in its
four year history. At the BCS Tournament, we lost in the Consolation final. We managed a 2-6 record in
ETIAC league play and made the playoffs, losing to a strong Alexander Galt team in the semi-finals. Our
overall record was 11-15. Included in the list of teams that we beat this season were: BCS, Richmond, MVR,
LCC, WIC, HS Billings, QHS ... an impressive list.
With a few exceptions, we had a close knit group. We were a team that depended to a large degree on
the starting five. This put a lot of pressure on them, and made it a long season for the reserves, many of
whom saw limited floor time. I appreciate their commitment and continual good nature, (e.g. “1 second
Artur” on Jeff’s “season ending 3 pointer that wasn’t”).
I was proud to be associated with this group, and they too can take pride in the fact that they represented
the school well both on and off the court.
Thanks as well to JJ Darville and Nadeem Afzal, both of whom maintained a high level of commitment
to the program in the often thankless job of manager {in Nadeem’s case, manager, player (alumni), coach
(down the sideline), counter of players and uniforms, etc, etc.}

Once again I was fortunate enough to coach the senior girls’ basket-
ball team. Although it is a long season, it is a always a very enjoyable
one for me. The girls work very hard and seriously at their game to
compete in a strong ETIAC league.
This year’s highlight of the season was the BCS tournament where
Stanstead played three strong games, winning two and losing the third
by two points. This loss was to the eventual winners of the tournament.
Congratulations to our Major “S” and Senior “S” recipients and espe-
cially to Kristen Denney who received the Bess Ferguson Trophy as
the team’s MVP. I would like to take this time to express my best wishes
for the future to all the graduating players and I hope to see you at

This year’s swim team, lead by captain Linda
Crawford, had a very challenging, yet successful
season. We enjoyed the presence of new faces to
our team this season and recognized improvements
made by our returning swimmers. The combina-
tion of old and new talented and committed swim-
mers lead the Stanstead team to a second place
finish overall in the Sherbrooke league. We are
also extremely proud of the Bantam girls and Juv-
enile boys who finished first in their respective
categories in the Sherbrooke league. Our region
was also represented by Noemie Johnson, Velika
Parent, and Emma Rocke on April 3rd and 4th
at the Provincials.
Highlights of our season included a luxurious
video bus to one of our meets in Montreal, and the
meet in Sherbrooke when two of our swimmers
forgot to count lengths and ended an eight length
race after six lengths. They were even given a sec-
ond chance to swim the race again, this time, how-
ever, they swam the race correctly.
Congratulations to Linda Crawford and Jenson

Before Christmas the team - all 43 of us - enjoyed doing weights
in the local gym, running and playing soccer; one day with a
tennis ball in the snow. Finally in the new year we had lots
of snow and half of the team learned skating and traditional
techniques from the other half. We had lots of falls and snow
fights and had a few students lost in the woods.
Most importantly we had some fun competitions; including
Craftsbury, Bishops and the ETIAC finals in Sedber where the
team placed second. Three students also participated in the Ot-
tawa Ski Marathon under beautiful blue skies and perfect powd-
ery snow. Maxime Parent completed six sections and earned
a gold medal. Next year we hope to take a busload of students
to this exciting weekend event.
When the season ended all the students had learned a lot and
were able to participate in our own relay team competition
- realizing that winter is not so bad after all. Congratulations
to Maxime Parent who was awarded the Eric Ed Trophy.

This year’s team did not have a winning record but it did have a great
amount of spirit. The season was unique in two ways: Kirsten Layzell
became the first girl to play on the Senior boys hockey team and the
team won its own invitational tournament.
A small school with an international student body limits the number
of potential hockey players to draw from. Yet those who did play showed
dedication and good sportsmanship. Losing isn’t easy one the psych!
I would like to thank Sam in nets. He was a wall back there. I would
also like to thank Fred, Tony and David for their leadership. I look for-

This year’s squash team was a great delight to coach. I was able
to watch each player grow in performance, sportsmanship and skill.
Both veterans and new members went to the very limit of their
abilities in some very exciting matches against Bishops College,
Selwyn House and Trinity College. I was particularly impressed
this year by the team’s display of gentlemanliness and patience.
Numerous tournaments were played this season creating a stim-
ulating variety of situations for our players. There were signifi-
cant trophies won by Michael Atkin in the junior division at
Bishops College and Johnny Wong at the “Invitational” Open in
Montreal. I would also like to thank our captain Danny Yeh for
leading by example. He is a superb and highly respected player.

This year I had the pleasure of working with a group of ten very mature and competitive
young ladies.
Although only half the team were veterans, the newcomers worked very hard to improve
their skills and move their way up the squash ladder.
This year the girls participated in a quite a few tournaments. They competed against BCS
in four, tournaments and improved steadily. They also competed against a variety of com-
petitors from the Eastern Townships area during the Champlain College Tournament and
the Eastern Townships Open.
I was most pleased with the girls’ positive attitudes on and off the courts during games
and practices.
I want to thank the girls for a great winter term. We had quite the CULTURE CLUB
which made our work together even more interesting. I look forward to working with the
returning students again next year and to those graduating and moving on I wish them
the best of luck in all their endeavours.

The edition of the Junior Boys’ Basketball this year
was a fresh one as all but one person were new to
the team. We had some talent, but to succeed we
needed to have a team effort for every second of the
game. During the season we had a glimpse of this
but it was not to be. Too much individuality on the
team made it difficult for us to succeed. However, all
of this is a stepping block in learning team play. Our
highlight of the year was the L.C.C. Tournament
where we had two exciting games, one we lost in over-
time and the other we won against L.C.C. on the last
shoot of the game - a three pointer by Jonathan. It
was a long season but we enjoyed ourselves. Congrat-

This season has been a learning experience for both the team and myself. First of all we had to learn
to work together as a harmonious group. This was easily accomplished as the girls were very supportive,
eager to learn, and enthusiastic to play.
Our first game was a success. The final score was 44-5 in our favor. We were all hoping that this would
be the way the season would progress. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
What impressed me the most about the team was that they never gave up no matter how grim the sit-
uation looked. The team spirit could be felt both on and off the court. Words of encouragement could be
heard from the young ladies. The team never got discouraged, they all gave 100% in both effort and positive
attitude. We may have lost more games than we won, but the ladies held their heads high, never complained,
and complimented each other on a battle well-fought.
One thing I remember most is hearing laughter throughout the season. I’m a believer in teamwork and
in this case there was no lack of that. The ladies worked very hard and had fun as a unified group. Many
times I caught myself laughing right along with them as we went through our paces. In the long run, this
made my job easier as a coach because I never had to worry about low morale - the team never displayed
this (nor would they allow it!). All I witnessed from the sidelines was a team working together, helping
each other, and enjoying the game of basketball.
I will look back on my first year of coaching the Junior Girls’ basketball team with fond memories. I
thank the young ladies for all that they have done for me, but mostly, all that they have done for the team.
Ladies, in my opinion, you are all winners.

The second year of the Bantam Boys program saw another mixed group brought
together to form a team. There was a total of 10 boys who started with the pro-
gram. After one left the school in January, and others were sick/confmed/etc.,
we often played games with only six or seven players. The skill level of the
team was not outstanding, but it did grow over the course of the season. We
had a number of overage Bantams, but were given special permission to play
in the ETIAC Bantam Boys League. Our ETIAC record was 1-7 and we were
eliminated from advancing to the playoffs.
Thanks of the boys and myself must go to Stephen Telling who helped coach-
ing the team. This meant double travel from both he and I and the effort was
appreciated.
Congratulations to award winners . . .
Bantam ‘S’: Jeffrey Schouela, Martin Trudeau, and Rene Villarreal I hope
that the whole team realized the principle that there is much more to playing
a team sport than who scores the most baskets or the best looking baskets. Ef-
fort and attitude must be concerted and consistant.

The Junior Hockey program had one of its most successful and enjoyable
seasons in recent memory. With a mixture of ages, talent and experience
we were able to put together a 7 and 8 season with most games being lost
or won by a goal or two. The skill improvement from November until March
was remarkable, especially with some of the younger players.
I felt very fortunate in having such veterans as Stefan Bolduc, George Good-
sell, Philip Infilise, Peter Kasowski and James Chi who have been with the
program for three years. Their contribution to the team over the years, espe-
cially in helping the younger players has been most gratifying to me as a
coach. Alex Petraki, our rookie goal tender shared the net minding respon-
sibilities at the beginning of the season, but ended up being our starting
and only goaltender for the balance of the schedule. He improved greatly.
Our scoring punch came from two young fellows, Matthew Stevenson and
Vito Pagnelli who had incredible chemistry between them and showed great
unselfishness in complimenting each others talents. My sincere thanks to
the journeyman players who may not have seen as much action as others,
but without whom a junior program would not have been possible. A very
sincere thank you.

In recent years the track & field programme has generally carried anywhere from
25-30 students and the 1993 edition was no exception. However there were some
noticeable differences with this team. First of all the team makeup had a very un-
even distribution which made it difficult to enter many events either individually
or as a team. For example we had 6 bantam girls but 0 bantam boys; in the midget
class we had 1 1 competitors but 8 were girls and with only 3 boys we couldn’t qual-
ify for a relay race. The shortage in numbers can also have an effect on the overall
performances of individuals who enter many events rather than concentrating on
just the ones in whcih they are particularly competitive. The other major difference
was in the area of talent where, while we did have a number of good results, the
team did not have any truly outstanding or dominant track and field athletes. Nev-
ertheless the students gave a good account of themselves and were excellent rep-
resentatives for the school. For the most part I feel that the students enjoyed the
track season and the camaraderie and competitiveness that goes with it. Due to the
individual nature of the sport the students worked to improve their personal best
times and distances and were generally satisfied with their results as the season
progressed.
As usual the coaching staff enjoy both the season and working with the students
and this year was certainly no exception. On behalf of Coach Channell and Coach
Philip I would like to thank the team for a fun and relaxed track season and extend
our congratulations to all trophy and awards winners.

It has been a great pleasure to work with this year’s girls’ tennis team.
They had an extremely successful season with very wide margin wins and
were excellent examples of good sportsmanship on and off the court.
Sadly, we lose Sakiko, who for 3 years has been our backbone. We all wish
her well at University and thank her for her constant support and encour-
agement. As well, a fond good-bye to the other members of our team who
contributed to making this a particularly good season. Remember: “Zoot!!”

I would like to congratulate all the players this season for their exceptional
effort in Tennis. Each student on the team displayed a fine sportsmanship
and integrity under virtually every kind of situation. There were some out-
standing matches against B.C.S., Selwyn House and Massey Vanier. Our
junior players were eager to learn about the game and exhibited an incred-
ible potential for future years. There are two Major “S’s” that I would like

This year’s rugby team was a mixture of veterans and rookies which boded well
for a great team. Everything started very well with the RCS Netherwood tour-
nament held during early May in New Brunswick. We won three games, tied one
and lost in the championship game in triple overtime. The trip was excellent in
every aspect and I would like to tell everyone how proud I was the way they rep-
resented our school. They showed a lot of class.
The trip was hard to beat which could explain our rough season in the GMAA.
We seemed to lack motivation or concentration. We were 0-4 in the league but
the games were close. Not having Alvaro and Francois in league games put us
at a disadvantage
Finally we played BCS for the McEwans Cup which we had won last year. BCS
got the breaks and proceeded to beat us in a very tight game. The intensity was
great. I hope we can learn as a team to have the same intensity for every game.
I would like to congratulate Frank Lee, Sam Skoryna and Zaid Mahayni for their
“Senior S” and I would also like to congratulate Rob Mason and Alvaro Forres
for their “Major S”. Thank you to everyone who played and did not play often

Obviously the most noteworthy aspect of this programme, this year, is the fact
that it is a ‘first’ at the College and part of a new but rapidly-gr owing trend in the
Province.
The most impressive aspect, from the coaches’ perspective, has been the enthu-
siasm and dedication of the girls involved. There was a great deal of initial interest
at the beginning of the Spring sports season and, after the tryouts, the team settled
into a corps of twenty members, including our excellent manager. Each of the play-
ers was very keen, attentive and carried out the drills thoroughly. Despite the fact
that all were new to the game, the girls picked up its rules and skills quickly so
that they were soon ready to compete with other teams.
Unfortunately, it proved quite difficult to arrange many matches and only one
was played as originally scheduled. This was against Beaconsfleld High School which
Stanstead won convincingly by a score of 20 to 0. An excellent season opener! Then
came an interesting trip to Pierrefonds, with Youpie as the bus driver, where the
girls played a very evenly-matched game that saw some excellent rugby but ended
in a scoreless tie. Finally, in the second game against the Ducks (who were anything
but cute and cuddly) the team limped away from a very one-sided game both in terms
of the score and the number of hospital visits.
All in all, the season was a tremendous learning experience and a lot of fun for
all concerned. Thanks to all the girls and staff who made this a viable new programme
at Stanstead.

This year Stanstead’s junior rugby program at-
tracted the interest of twenty-two (22) players, and
was a mix of bantam and junior aged players. The
team continued to compete on an exhibition basis
mainly against teams from the Montreal league, BCS
and in one tournament. Although losses were out-
weighed by wins, the team played hard rugby against
more experienced and full junior-aged sides. Junior
aged players from both the junior and senior teams
rallied together to capture the BCS 7’s Tournament
title, winning the final against Selwyn House. Ju-
nior “S” recipients included captain Billy McDonald,
James Chi, Zeeshan Hussain and Nathan Couture

the captain, manager Bruce Mulholland, and all the

to your return to the program next season.

This has been a very enjoyable year for me as the Spectrum adviser: Without the cheerful
help of Mr. Duncan it was a much more active year and I still don’t know if everything has
been properly proof read but I think we have adapted well to the challenge. I would like to
thank David Skelton, our Editor-in-Chief for all his extra efforts in getting the ’93 edition
to meet our high standards.
To the Editors, all the artists and layout people and the photographers I owe a debt of grat-
itude for all the hours spent in putting a 204 page book together. I also want to thank Mr.
Gallant, our Headmaster, for all his support and for realizing that to have a good book you
have to take many pictures and you also have to keep up with the fast changing world of
yearbook publishing.
A special thanks to the small crew of three under the able guidance of Miguel Sorensen
who worked all year without sending one page to our publisher. They started the ball rolling
to computerize the publication of at least a part of our book. For those of us who realize what
a long job it is to become computer literate person we understand how frustrating and boring
it can be. However, our goal is to have one hundred pages done on the computer for the ’94
book and we will go onwards and upwards from there.
Thanks everyone for a great year. To those who are leaving we all wish you the best of
luck. To those who are returning I look forward to working with-you once again to produce
the first SPECTRUM that will be done partially on the computer.

DE BATIN G AND PUBLIC SPEAKING
The Debating/Public Speaking Club kept busy with a number of activ-
ities. The club hosted debaters from BCS in November for three rounds
of debates. The competition gave many students their first debating ex-
perience.
In February, Secondary IV and V students competed against each other
for eligibility for the QAIS Senior Public Speaking Competition held at
ECS in Montreal. Victor Kasowski represented Stanstead speaking on
“Violence in the Media” and was amongst a wide range of high quality
speakers.
Two Grade 12 students, Nadeem Afzal and Eric Chu, participated in
the World Affairs Conference in Toronto. The Conference Topic was “The
Gender Challenge: A New Hope for Women and Men” and opened up a
variety of interesting dialogue on gender issues. The spring schedule con-
sisted of an in-school Public Speaking Contest as well as several internal
club debates. Thanks to all members for their involvement!

The River Revellers
Stars Shone in the mist of the night.
Moon stood silently by the stars.
Clouds cluttered around the crest.
Hills rose to the highest peak.
River ran swiftly to and fro.
Wind whistled through the air.
Trees towered to the tips,
Branches shadowing the bridges.
Dry leaves covered like the desert.
The brown ground stepped on without sight.
Shapeless shadows formed in silhouettes.
Echoes rallied through the emptiness.
Waves washing against the rocks.
Ripples formed at each rock.
Dampness deepened with each foot.
The deep river sparkled like diamonds.
As the stars reflected of the river.
Broken branches bloodying the legs as they passed.
Finally they reached the broad bridge.
There they sat under the starry sky.
Letting the breeze brush by them.
The stick struck into a shiny flame.
The bottles popped into each belly.
Chitter-chatter broke the silence.
Then the river stopped rippling.
The moon stopped shimmering.
Stars shone away.
The clouds clashed.
The sky spoke.
Never again were the river revellers to return.
By Nadeem Afzal (Grade 12).
WHAT IS IT
I dread the day that I will perish
Though I may meet Lucifer himself
Or I may encounter God
The creator of my life
I fear that I may not succeed
Or complete my dreams
Therefore I shall stay well
For there is ample in what I am able to do.

THE END
It’s about time the world ends
Because we are all tired
Of that land
That is used or burned
It’s about time the world is set on fire
In our shame, no respect, no matter what,
Things can’t stay the same
It’s about time the world ends
Not in shame
Not in war or violent combats
But only in peacewill it reign

A Woman
A woman is measured by the things she cannot con-
trol. She is measured by the way her body curves or
doesn’t curve, by where she is flat or straight or
round. She is measured by 36-24-36 inches and ages
and numbers: by all the outside things that don’t ever
add to who she really is inside.
And so if a woman should be measured let her be
measured by all the qualities and difficulties that she
can control. Let her be measured by who she is or
how she is trying to become.
The main thing women do know is that measure-
ments are statistics;
and statistics lie . . .

REMEMBER
When our eyes met for the first time
my heart was yours and yours was mine
When I asked your hands in the park
you kissed my lips in the dark
When we danced together cheek to cheek
we finally got the love we seek
When your heart bent on mine
the whole world seemed too shine
you charmed me with your beauty so fine
When your soft voice lulled me to sleep
I declared to you that my love was deep
When we lived together side by side
and there was no more secrets left to hide
When I couldn’t stand to be away from you
you were always with me whatever I do
When our eyes forgot the meaning of tears
and our souls said adieu to all our fears
When we were called husband and wife
and there began a long, happy life
When our first child finally came to earth
and the birds sang celebrating his birth
Come, sit with me on the beach and remember
when I told you that love could last forever

MON PAYS

TREASURES FOREVER
Keep me close, asked the well-worn picture
Either that, or never forget me, said the dried flower.
In your heart and mind,
These things should cherish,
Hold onto, in your memory - forever.
Candle lit faces around a campfire,
Remember the good times.
Or else, they’ll die with the passing of time,
Left forgotten in the pursuit of other things.
You’ll eventually regret it, if that happens.
Never let go of the past; please never forget me
C. Stokes
REBIRTH OF THE FORGOTTEN
Off in a corner, left forgotten
Stands a memory, misbegotten.
Lonely and forsaken
It longs to be remembered.
Unless unfortunately, it becomes mistaken.
A glimpse, a glimmer, a ray of light.
Something familiar, a dream in the night,]
Stirring memories of the forgotten.
It is finally remembered.
Never truly forgotten,
Just a memory worn by time.
Growing dusty in a corner,
Now pried loose by a fleeting similarity;
Brought into the open, shining with clarity.
It was finally remembered.

Mr. A.R. Eveleigh Ms. D. O’Neill
One evening in August of 1969 a man with an amazing black beard and an even more amazing British accent, rounded the corner
of Bugbee House and got his first panoramic view of the Stanstead College campus. Tony Eveleigh had just arrived in Canada from
England and was ready to take up his duties as a teacher of mathematics. Did he really suspect what lay ahead of him? Within days
he was embroiled in the hectic life of this boarding school with all the joys and trials that such an environment entails.
Obviously he was a person who liked to be deeply involved in his work. Aside from those assigned duties of teaching, house duties
and sports, it was not long before he was taking students on hiking and camping trips on weekends. If there were no time for an
overnight trip, then a Sunday afternoon hike would have to do. Winter arrived and this man from rainy England became an avid
cross-country skier and ski coach. For the next twenty-four years that sport remained his passion. His inveterate optimism would
not allow him to admit defeat even when a January thaw left the fields and trails bare, and the rain fell in torrents. Brush cutting
to prepare new trails, trail-marking and finally breaking trail in the new snow occupied the fall and early winter. Races in absolutely
frigid weather, the Canadian Ski Marathon and skiing for the joy of it saw him and his team through the winter.
It may seem that his teaching of mathematics had become of secondary interest. His classroom involvement and his commitment
to his subject and his students were always in the forefront. No student can forget his classes where many finally realized that it
was possible to “do mathematics”. Those chalk-covered fingers and hands, the chalk-covered jacket all attested to the challenge being
offered and accepted in that classroom. (Did anyone ever see that sport jacket removed in the classroom or anywhere around the school?)
None will forget the help sessions offered unselfishly in the evening and on the weekends. It was always possible to find out how
to do that one thorny problem or one could always ask for some last minute help or attend regularly-scheduled review sessions before
an examination period. Through laughter and tears many students finally unravelled the complexities of what they thought was an
impossible subject.
The years passed and he was named head of the Math/Science Department. Devotion to providing the best teaching for the students
of Stanstead College and for encouraging the highest academic achievement in Mathematics and Sciences continued the philosophy
of the department. The excellent reputation of Stanstead students in the Mathematics and Science departments of many Canadian
universities is due to that devotion.
To some he is known as Sir or Mr. Eveleigh, to others he is simply Tony. Maybe someone actually calls him Anthony. Someone
referred to him as Mr. Everleigh, and some unnamed students dared to refer to Mr. Evil Eye. Whatever his name, he has been, and
still is, a dedicated teacher and a warm and understanding human being both to his students and his colleagues.
By whatever name we call you, we wish you happiness and health in your retirement years. We thank you for your time, your presence,
your understanding and good humour and your ability to inspire. We hope to see you often and will be happy when we do. Best wishes
and good luck!
- Paul Duncan
Although Della and her family have spent the last three years with us, it doesn’t seem quite right that they will be leaving at the
end of this school year to return to Montreal.
The infirmary and the many phases of school life which work closely with the nurse have shared a common concern for everyone
connected with the school. The various sports programs have always consumed much of the nurses time and Della was certainly no
exception.
I think I speak on behalf of all student athletes and coaches when I say that it was always comforting to know that we were being
looked after at home or on the road.
I know I echo everyone’s sentiments when I say that morning breaks in the staff room won’t be the same without Ryan or Derrod
putting a smile on everyone’s face.
Della and her Department will be our loss. However, I’m sure her husband, Peter, will welcome the thought of not having to drive
the autoroute every day.
All of us at Stanstead - faculty, staff and students - wish Della and Peter and their family a continued happy life in Montreal. Thank
you for sharing the past three years with us and please come back to visit when you can.
